Untitled from Real Frequency on Vimeo.

On his recent stop in Toronto to promote his album The Death of Adam Arcee did some diggin’ with producer 88-Keys. We get his thoughts on his record, among other things. You gotta love A’s interview style here, diggin’ and interviewing, multi-tasking, is not his forte.

Differently Still Guy Episode 13 w/ K-Cut

kkut

In the short history of DSG we’ve had some ill episodes, Maestro was sick, the hilarity of J-Wyze but, unlucky episode 13 is by far the best. Not because we go track for track with K-Cut, one third of Main Source, on the classic Breakin’ Atom’s record to uncover a track aimed at Eric B, the origins of mentor Paul C, the creative process behind JustHangin’ out. That’s all good, BUT! We got the uber sclusie, never heard before selcct cuts from the original second Main Source album “The Science” that never made it out to your or our grubbly little hands. This was so sclusie the sclusie exec was left at the door while we listened. Keez had to open his own door. Hip Hop Nerds! Enjoy…

T-Dot to The D from Real Frequency on Vimeo.

People seem to forget how much ill Hip Hop is coming out of Detroit. Black Milk and Elzhi are leading the way. In town for a show, we kick it with them and Dj House Shoes, about of course, Dilla, the D’s Hip Hop “scene” and some politics.

8 Minutes With Q-Tip

This past summer we got the opportunity to talk to Q-Tip while he was in town for the Rock the Bells tour. Originally schedule to be at his hotel, wrenches where thrown in and we ended up back stage at the show. We almost didn’t go! Good thing we did. Arcee runs through random joints with Tip and gets little stories associated with each one, oh, and we also talk about his new album “The Renaissance” (Nov 4th).

Oh boy. Our first non Hip Hop guest. Singer Ayah sits in with us on this nutty session. We quiz her Hip Hop knowledge, cause she says she’s Hip Hop, well prove it! LOL. Arcee exposes that he is socially retarded. And we all recount adventures with ‘substances’. Kids, drugs are bad, mmkay. Catch her on tour.

We continue with our ever increasingly popular offshoot podcast. This episode, we kick it with our man Maestro, aka Maestro Fresh Wes, aka Mellow D MC. Hell ya! What you will learn this episode, Maestro’s break knowledge, production prowess, his meeting with Nas, when he was nasty, and a sing-a-long with Nice N Smooth.

The bottom line for the Real Frequency is dope music, and exposing as many people as we can to it. We’ve been privileged to speak to a lot of artists the we feel. In 2004 these brothers dropped the classic album ‘Connected‘ four years later they’re back with ‘Leave it All Behind‘. Arcee kicks it with both Phonte and Nicolay about the new project, their side projects and why the change in direction.

The album drops: Oct 7th (Digital), Oct 10th (Europe), Oct 14th (North America).

Man the D has definitely made an impact on Hip Hop, but ya’ll know that already. Besides Dilla and Em there are other cats that helped build and continue to advance the scene. A couple of those cats are Saadiq and Waajeed aka the Platinum Pied Pipers, now known as PPP. They’ll be in town for North by North East this Saturday at the Sound Academy (11 Polson St.) for the Academy Soul Showcase along with Amanda Diva, Kae Sun, Coultrain and Karma.

We kicked it with Wajeed on his way home from the airport about their new album “Abundance” and of course production.

If you’re a regular reader of this blog you know we’ve been feelin’ these cats for a minute and we like to hype up cats we’re feelin’ before they get popular. It’s that whole Hip Hop “I put you on” attitude. Here’s the uncut version of the interview we had on the show a few weeks ago.

The day before the release of Getback we had an opportunity to talk to Phonte of Little Brother. Dude was straight up about his relationship with 9th Wonder, what happened with their record deals, and life in general. Real Talk. This is the unedited version we couldn’t play on the show.

Karriem Riggins Interview

Karriem Riggins

At the Real Freqs we love shedding light on the behind the scenes cats. We spoke to drummer, producer, MC Karriem Riggins before his performance at Stone Throws Move Toronto residency. Dude has worked with the likes of Common, Madlib, Slum Village, The Roots, J Dilla and recently Erykah Badu, impressive yes we know. Arcee kicks it with him about production, drumming etc.

Detroit’s Guilty Simpson is about to drop his debut album “Ode to the Ghetto” March 25th on Stones Throw. Here’s the full interview we aired parts of a few weeks a back. He talks about his relationship with Dilla, his thoughts on the D and reveals if he has a soft side.

Who said Gangstarr was over?????

We recently did an interview with Hip Hop icon DJ Premier, it turned out to be one of the best we’ve done. Dude is mad cool and open with alot! He dropped some bombs, especially about his current relationship with his Gangstarr counterpart Guru, and the possibility of another Gangstarr record download it here.

On the topic of interviews here are some others I recommend, check out Hot 97′s Pete Rosenberg’s with N.O.R.E., mad hilarious, and Funkmaster Flex’s interview with MC Shan, Big Daddy Kane and Doug E. Fresh.

  1. Sab A Said,

    Hi there,
I was wondering if any of you knew the Toronto based MC rapper, Mathematik’s ethnicity? As well as his religious belief..I can barely find a proper biography of him, all I kno is he grew up in malvern.
    Thx!

Hollerate!
