Differently Still Guy Episode 50: Jake One
Last modified on 2010-10-30 21:20:42 GMT. 9 comments. Top.

The “hommie” producer Jake One (G Unit, Freeway) was in town this past weekend, and insisted he get on DSG. We did a special Sunday edition just for him. Classic DSG foolery goes down, we get some behind the scene artist stories, verify Jake’s claims that most of Arcee’s slang originates from him, and some “ill” demos you ain’t never heard!

Dank of Frank-N-Dank sits in with the DSG crew. He speaks candidly about the Slum Village situation, shares a few studio stories and even dips into his stash of personal, original Dilla Beat CD’s (with original Dilla handwriting – CRAZY!!). We’re already talking about a part 2!
Differently Still Guy Episode 48: Random Rap Stew

“There is a moment in every man’s life where he must succumb to his selfish, childish desires and nerd out on random rap.”
- Arcee.
So that is what we did.

After an extended hiatus, we back bitches! Arcee’s secret porn stash revealed, Drake hate, Inzauny origins and more nonsensical rambling. You know how we do.
Differently Still Guy Episode 46: Reflection
Last modified on 2010-04-27 23:51:46 GMT. 8 comments. Top.
This show is dedicated to Keith “Guru” Elam. When thinking of guests, the only bigger Gang Starr head than Inzane we could think of was Big Sproxx of 16 Bars. We were sure he’d have some strong opinions on Solar as well. As an added surprise OTA Lives’ Ty Harper joins us as we go over our favourite Gang Starr albums, the uniqueness of “The Voice” and Guru’s influence on bringing Jazz and Hip Hop together. Looking back you really begin to appreciate his contributions. R.I.P.
Differently Still Guy Episode 45 w/ DJ Grouch

We’ve made a pact that the homie Dj Grouch will appear on all record speed episodes, so expect him back for ep 78. Grouch ask before we started what the topic for this DSG would be, topic? WTF is a topic? We plan nathan around here. Our convo goes from Grouch’s Dj class at Scratch Lab to eating and driving techniques. Random ish, ya know how we do.

The Olympic spirit is extremely strong because it got Arcee to watch a hockey game. We actually talk about sports, albeit Olympic sports but, sports! We go from the highs of Canada’s sporting success to the lows of the news that Keith Elam aka Guru has been hospitalized and in a coma, our thoughts are with him and his loved ones.

Dr. P-Plus is in the building! For those of you still having trouble getting the ladies, learn the P Plus method of “Letting it be known”, or the Arcee and Inzane method of “Do as little work as possible”. The Freqs go deep on relations.
Differently Still Guy Episode 43 w/Starting From Scratch

The incomprable DJ Starting from Scratch (Flow 93.5 FM, Amnesia, Sweet Tears, Russell Peters tour Dj, etc, etc, etc) enters the DSG world this week. We go through the history of one of Canada’s top Dj’s, from how knowing Arcee from back then enhanced his career (not really) to the state of Djing today, (boring) or is it…
Differently Still Guy Episode 42: Top 25 Albums of the Decade

As we wrap up 2009, we take a look back at the decade’s best albums. Hello bitches, were back! We take a look at the career of the God MC, Rakim. Is he still deserving of such a title, considering his last few efforts have not lived up to his classic works? We attempt to listen to his latest album “The Seventh Seal”, listen to Ra speak on Nas’ Unauthorized Biography, and Arcee’s waning confidence at keeping him as his number one MC.
Differently Still Guy Episode 38 w/ Michael Williams
Last modified on 2009-10-28 18:49:48 GMT. 9 comments. Top.
I must say we were quite amped for this episode. For most of us in our late 20′s to 40′s growing up in Canada and getting the latest in “urban” music was something you planned for since there were so few outlets, so when that one Hip Hop radio show came on in your city, everyone was listening at the same time.
The same could be said for Muchmusic., Canada’s music station. Seeing a R&B/Soul or Hip Hop video only happened originally on one show, Soul In The City, everyone watched or taped it for the latest, oh and when there was a Hip Hop special, it was an event! From that show eventually Rap City became a reality and so on. The original face for both of those shows and others like the Power Hour and New Music, was Michael Williams, he of the sleevless T’s.
We go through a ton of history in one hour, if you hear some names you don’t know, get up on Google the man has a wealth of musical knowledge.
If you need more, you can catch Mike, George Stroumboulopoulos (yes the guy from The Hour), K-Os, and Your Boy Brian over at 206 Beverly next Thursday Oct 29th for Stay Gold

Food glorious food! Tell me where that song is from and I’ll give you a candy. P Pleezy sits in on this session as we discuss food, how much would you pay for a good meal, and just because it’s expensive is it really a good meal? That’s not all though, it is impossible for us not to talk about music, record shopping to Acree’s well documented hatred of Neo Soul.
Differently Still Guy Episode 36 w/ Jason Chambers
Last modified on 2009-09-16 16:28:27 GMT. 4 comments. Top.

This is an unprecedented episode. After repeatedly telling our guests “we got to have you back”, and never doing so, DJ Jason Chambers (Attitude Sound Crew, Flow 93.5 Mid-day Mix, Amnesia) has the honourable distinction of being the first ever repeat guest. It was more of just happening to be around the studio at the time, than anything else. we kid, we kid.
We touch on the value of records, the deterioration of the ‘music community’, and Mr. West.

We brought you the genius of The Nutcracker a few months ago. Now we return with “Classic Wackness” from Tim Dog. “Penicillin on Wax” dropped in ’91, and Arcee was one of the few to listen to it more than once, or at all. How this guy got away with some of these lyrics is amazing. Someone actually put this out! how did we think any of this was dope, or did we?
Differently Still Guy Episode 34 w/David ‘Click’ Cox

Former Universal Music Canada A&R David ‘Click’ Cox is our guest this week. We go through some more T-Dot history, going back to the Illemental days and get some inside on how it all came togther. And a look at respect in hip hop. Plus we put a couple of artists on blast!
Differently Still Guy Episode 33 1/3 w/ DJ Grouch
Last modified on 2009-07-09 00:17:57 GMT. 2 comments. Top.

Our long time hommie and comrade (homrade?) DJ Grouch joins us this week for a good old-fashioned dose of shit talk on Differently Still Guy. Grouch was one of the first people I met when I started at CHRY back in 1994. He held down the Soundcheck show for over 10 years and has been named Underground DJ of the Year by the Stylus DJ Awards twice. He’s laid down cuts and performed with almost every artist you can think of in Toronto – from Sauks to Kardi to Melanie Durrant, Citizen Kane, K-Os and even yours truly. And he’s represented Canada on the world stage as part of DJ crew Turnstylez with Lil Jaz and D-Scratch. But most importantly he’s one of the most stand-up, talented and humble people I know. And in this industry, that should never be taken for granted.

I must say this is the *pause* heavy episode, we reached out to Dj extrodinaire Jason Chambers of Mid-Day Mix and Amnesia fame but he brought a surprise guest, Toronto super promoter Ian Andre Espinet. This could only lead to trouble. We cover flavoured roti shells, the best roti spot in the T-Dot, East Toronto vs West Toronto, and many other topics of un-interest to those not from our beloved city, for T-Dot heads… you will only be shaking them.

We’re loungin’ loungin’ mellowing out and just loungin’. As much as we love Gang Starr Foundation music, they seem to provide us with no end of comedy. We give you a preview of a new joint from Guru as well as take a look at a young, naive and in “love” Arcee.

Differently Still Guy Episode 24 – Save 88.1!
Last modified on 2009-03-26 01:41:28 GMT. 4 comments. Top.

CKLN 88.1 FM is Canada’s epicenter for urban music. Alot of us heard our first hip hop song on Ron Nelsons’ Fantastic Voyage or the latest house, R&B or dance joint, from Dave’s Dance Music. Before we made our move to comercial radio, 88.1 was our home, holding down that infamous Saturday afternoon hip hop slot that Ron and DJ X built.
It’s doors are now closed due to internal conflict. Programmers Mel Boogie (Droppin Dimez), 7:30 and DJ Linx (The Mixtape Massacre) join us this week on Differently Still Guy to shed some light on the crisis.

It’s been a minute. I’m sure you DSG fiends were jonzin’ something awful, like you dealer left town or something. Well this episode should make up for the last two week. This has to be by far the most ridiculous episode yet. The world of auto-tune collides with the Real Freqs, that can never lead to anything good. Just hilarity. T-Pain ain’t got nothing on us!

Bell or Rogers, two evil empires screwing us all. We’ll let P tell you the story, and AR is being screwed and doesn’t even know it. Ahhhh system access fees.

We promised we’d bring OTA’s Ty Harper on a couple episodes back, we had to bump him last episode for K-Cut. He understood, and came back this week. We made sure to warn him prior that we will not talk about the state of Canadian Hip Hop or the music industry. We tried, some how it ended up there, sort of. Ty’s a passionate dude so it had to come out. Oh, and you get the exclusive Arcee pork on my fork verse.
Differently Still Guy Episode 13 w/ K-Cut
Last modified on 2009-04-21 23:39:06 GMT. 23 comments. Top.
In the short history of DSG we’ve had some ill episodes, Maestro was sick, the hilarity of J-Wyze but, unlucky episode 13 is by far the best. Not because we go track for track with K-Cut, one third of Main Source, on the classic Breakin’ Atom’s record to uncover a track aimed at Eric B, the origins of mentor Paul C, the creative process behind JustHangin’ out. That’s all good, BUT! We got the uber sclusie, never heard before selcct cuts from the original second Main Source album “The Science” that never made it out to your or our grubbly little hands. This was so sclusie the sclusie exec was left at the door while we listened. Keez had to open his own door. Hip Hop Nerds! Enjoy…
