I remember listening to Foreign Exchange’s “Connected” in awe, what was this? Who were these guys? I think the whole crew couldn’t stop listening this record. What was it? Hip Hop, R&B, Soul? It was crazy and very original at that time. Then learning that it was done by a producer (Nicolay) from Holland and Little Brother’s Phonte, over the internet by swapping files! Even more crazy.
Foreign Exchange has been working on “Leave It All Behind” (October 10th). I’m quite interested to hear what they’ve done this time condsidering that Nicolay has moved to the US and is a lot closer to Phonte. Some of the old cast is back, the album includes Darien Brockington and Yazarah, as well as Zo from Zo and Tigallo fame, and Muhsinah.
People seem to like tracklistings and art work, so here it is. I’m more interested in the music.

In the last 5 years, I’ve really opened myself up to a whole other world of inspiration, namely art and design. My personal feeling is that hip-hop doesn’t always represent itself in the best visual way. Graffiti has always been a staple of our culture, but I hardly feel we should be relegated to it. But for some reason, the hip-hop art world outside of graffiti rarely garners any attention. I discovered the work of Kehinde Wiley by accident. I was watching a short film by Hillman Curtis (www.hillmancurtis.com) on design icon Stefan Sagmeister and ended up on www.deitch.com, a NY art gallery that just happened to be featuring the work of the aforementioned Mr. Wiley. I’m hardly the first person to co-sign Kehinde Wiley. I just find it interesting that Elton John was up on him before I was. I could interpret his work at length. But that would be shit compared to checking it out yourself at www.kehindewiley.com.
We get a lot of music over here at the Real Freqs, I have to admit theres a ton of stuff that doesn’t make it on the blog much less the show. We tend to be very selective. No offense to any artists but, there has to be standards.
This one has met our approval. Out the D we introduce Stryfe Dafantam. Dude’s been puttin’ in work State-side to Europe buildin’.

Skills bought 15 copies of the Roots new album Rising Down as a symbol of support for his peoples. Dope. Stop complaining about how wack shit is. Support the goodness. I’m not saying by 15 copies! If you like an artist buy the CD, go to a show, spread the word. That’s how we build this shit up and keep good music alive. I’ve seen Hip Hop grow from a “fad” to an industry, the people made that happen, cause we loved it a supported it.

This is one of the few R&B artists I’m feeling these days because dude is simply talented. Check out his YouTube page to see his creative process when making beats, he even ordered a trumpet and had it couriered to him to finish off a beat. His album comes out June 17th, but if you’re savvy enough, you could probably find it online, as it leaked early last year. Not sure if it will be exactly the same, but the LP that leaked was pretty dope (the joint w/ Snoop Dogg is my shit).
