The most important three hours for hip-hop in Toronto has always been Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. on CKLN 88.1 FM. It all began back in 1983 with The Fantastic Voyage, the first hip-hop radio shot to exist in Canada. The torch was passed to The Power Move Show, The Real Frequency then Mixtape Massacre, making this timeslot the longest running source for hip-hop music in the country.

On Saturday, February 12, 2011, a monumental gathering took place when all four generations of radio shows came together for a single broadcast. The impact of this musical institution is captured in the short documentary, “1 to 4.

“Andrew Munger is a documentary filmmaker from Toronto who, in 1994 made a film about hip hop culture. Make Some Noise is a document of underground hip hop in Canada. With a cast that includes appearances by Ghetto Concept, Thrust, a youthful Mos Def, Dan-E-O, Wio-K, Jelleestone and Farley Flex (to name a few), Make Some Noise received ample press coverage, it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and was even offered distribution by TV Ontario and garnered interest from the CBC.”

Spotted at NahRight, some rare footage from a 2003 show J Dilla did with Frank-N-Dank at Roxy Blu. He talks about the love he got in Toronto and even mentions how crazy fans got at a show they did previous to this one. He says “2 years ago” but it quite possibly could have been the Slum Village show at Comfort Zone in 1998 that we posted the audio of a while back. Either way, Toronto Love Jay, R.I.P. Dilla Dawg!
