I must say we were quite amped for this episode. For most of us in our late 20′s to 40′s growing up in Canada and getting the latest in “urban” music was something you planned for since there were so few outlets, so when that one Hip Hop radio show came on in your city, everyone was listening at the same time.

The same could be said for Muchmusic., Canada’s music station. Seeing a R&B/Soul or Hip Hop video only happened originally on one show, Soul In The City, everyone watched or taped it for the latest, oh and when there was a Hip Hop special, it was an event! From that show eventually Rap City became a reality and so on. The original face for both of those shows and others like the Power Hour and New Music, was Michael Williams, he of the sleevless T’s.

We go through a ton of history in one hour, if you hear some names you don’t know, get up on Google the man has a wealth of musical knowledge.

If you need more, you can catch Mike, George Stroumboulopoulos (yes the guy from The Hour), K-Os, and Your Boy Brian over at 206 Beverly next Thursday Oct 29th for Stay Gold

  1. brownsound Said,

this was really good…i miss them old days on much music – when they’d play videos and the VJ’s knew their music. The new music/rapcity/soul in the city = groundbreaking stuff.

hahaha all that electric circus talk…remember the cowboy dude?

On the real Michael dropped names like The Game, and made it hard as hell for anyone else to say a word!

  2. arcee Said,

Dude. He straight silenced me on DSG. A definite Real Freq first. Ridiculous!!!!!!

  3. daShank Said,

    RIDICULOUS!!!!
Thank you so much Freqs – I cannot compliment you enough! I’m sitting here in Amsterdam, at my office desk and tears of joy are beginning.

Being from Montreal and then Toronto and now moving into my late 30s, this hit my heart deep.

    Thank you!
    daShank

  4. arcee Said,

Thanks man. We’re thankful for people like y’all. Without y’all, there would really be no reason to do this….As always, thanks for listening!!!!!

  5. Chaz Said,

    Knowledge is deep.

Gotta get MW back again for part 2.

Amazing story about Maestro and LMR. That was very nice – an episode for true music lovers.

  6. dice Said,

Excellent show once again. You could tell Arcee & Insane were just takin’ in all his experiences.

Who i’d love to hear on DSG next? Sauks, Sol Guy, Ron Nelson, Paul E. Lopes, of course my man Johnbronski again, Master T, Big C, Jazzy (from BMG days)…

And if you ever get Namugenyi Kiwanuka, i think i’d “just happen” to be in the studio too that day!

  7. inzane Said,

If there was a pic of our faces during that interview it would just be us wide-eyed, and
Mr. Nelson is definitely next on the radar. Nam? Yeah……

  8. DJ-J-ME Said,

Yo! I am so glad I happened to look at your facebook note about this episode. I used to watch Soul in the City whenever I could (growing up in Grimsby made it HARD to find that good soulful bizness…) I’ve been so unproductive this afternoon at work, just listening, hanging on every one of Michael’s words. I just knew him as the VJ, I didn’t realize just how DEEP he is and what all he’s done.

    Props and respect!

(P.S. Respect for having John Bronski on before too. I dj’d at one of his afterhours parties back in the day (after he heard me at a house party), and I was oblivious to how deep he was too, until he started telling me about his days back at CKLN with the reel to reel and everything.)

  9. gerbir21 Said,

great episode… i remember those soul in the city special episodes covering hiphop… was my 1st taste of Public Enemy & N.W.A. you must have him on again. Strombo would probably be another great guest.

Hollerate!
