Not sure if anyone knows as much Toronto Hip Hop history as this weeks guest (maybe Ron Nelson). Johnbronski is a journalist, radio show host, label guy and all around man of the people. John is like that big brother who’s seen it all and has a world of experience to pass on to us young’ns, and we only scracth the surface with the homie, we must do a part 2!

  1. Vatkeezy Said,

First episode I listened to in a while. Big up to Johnbronski, interesting to hear how it was back in the day. The equivalent of Keezy huh AR, don’t think so, because if it was, he would have bodied you.

  2. MrAtticsFriend Said,

  3. dice Said,

  4. ajax Said,

I haven’t even listened to this yet, and I’ve gotta big it up already. ‘Nuff respect to Johnbronski.

  5. quackas Said,

Great Podcast! Hope to hear more Johnbronski True Canadian hip Hop Stories…

  6. ajax Said,

I wouldn’t even know where to begin with commentary on this episode. A part two is definitely in order.

  7. vatkeezy Said,

MrAtticsFriend, say what up to Attic for me!

  8. brownsound Said,

wow…thanks for this…John, you’ve got to write a book on hip hop history in toronto. Looking forward to part 2. As arcee was saying, i’m a few years younger and always wondered about those years with some of the early talent. I had no idea crack hit so close to home – I’m gonna listen to this a few more times!

  9. MrAtticsFriend Said,

i tried i got voicemail, tell him stop being a fassi

  10. Son Of S.O.U.L. Said,

Maaaaaan, I can’t say enough about Big Brother JB. He really has been a big brother since I first met him at Starsound (89 or 90). I used to call the show like a fiend cuz him and DTS used to play sh1t nobody was playin’. Even at that age I knew my records, but John and DTS schooled me on a regular whenever I caught up with them….puttin’ me up on some obscure joints, lol!!!

That mindset of running obscure joints is something I hold strong to, thanks to cats like JB. Not on the strength of running them to say ” Hey look what I’m playing”, cuz that’s some hipster sh1t, but because it’s quality music that has been grossly overlooked. Not too long ago I heard Prince ‘Erotic City’ for almost one month straight every weekend I went out, and needless to say….I won’t be playing that anytime soon. We got mad talented cats on the wheels in this city….it’s true, but way to many of them are content in their litle comfort zone, and are afraid of breaking new ground. MOTHER F****** DON’T BREAK RECORDS ANYMORE!!!!! VERY VERY FEW GOT STYLE, VIBE, OR FEEL ANYMORE!!!!! I’ll always know when Grouch is on the set, or Jaz, Agile, my brother P Positive, and Inzane….to name a few, lol!!! Serato or not, you really can tell what era a cat is from by the way they play. You can’t teach style….you either got it, or you don’t.

Lastly….I’m gonna shout out some local DJs I grew up listening to, or watched closely:

Ron Nelson, Malik.X, Headly Jones, Mitch Winthrope, Howard Hughes, DJ Al Capone, Jam On Strong, DJX (who I wanted to battle whenever I heard him play, lmao!!!)….RESPECT DUE TO YOU….PEACE!!!!

Hollerate!
