The story goes that this is the beat tape that 9th initially gave to Jay-Z when he was taking submissions for “The Black Album”. Jay wasn’t really feeling any of these beats and told 9th to take the R. Kelly sample and do something on the spot with it. “Threat” was the result of that challenge, which made the album and boosted 9th’s career.
I personally think Jay was hating because there are a ton of hot beats on this CD, which ultimately got scooped by various artists (Little Brother, De La Soul, Jean Grae, etc.). 9th probably thought so too since some of the beats appeared on the Black Album Remix LP, “Black Is Back”, he did.
