Elzhi

Yezzzir, installment #2 of Unlocking The Vault! This week, I got Elzhi’s unreleased album that was supposed to come out on Capitol Records around the 2000-2002 era. The quality of the rip is not great because it is unmastered and the source CD actually had some skips on it, but the quality of the music is phenomenal! My favourite joints are “Walk Down Memory Lane”, “Palm Trees, Passion Fruit (Prod. J Dilla)”, “Feel This (feat. Dwele)”, and “Not Born To Lose”. If this ever comes out, go out and cop it to support Elzhi and keep real hip-hop alive.

Also, look out for Elzhi’s new project “The Prologue” on July 29th, which will feature the songs leaked on the “Euro Pass” mixtape, as well as even more new material! I personally can’t wait! For a sample of what to expect, check out our show archives, as we featured the “Euro Pass” mixtape a few weeks ago!

Looks like The Meaning of Dope aren’t the only ones with rare footage. Thanks to P for bringing this to light.

Jungle Sciene was my second DJ crew I formed with DJ Precise and Kev Dre back in 1994, we did mixtapes and the second version of the Real Freq show when it was CHRY 105.5 FM Thursday mornings. A couple of quick facts about Jungle Science, DJ Precise was part of Elemental along with G-Knight who blessed Da Grassroots classic “Drama”, we were one of the original mixtape crews, we did background mixes for Rap City back in the day, and we did what was possibly the first “legal” mix CD “It’s All Good”, which I don’t have a copy of, if you got one, can you rip it for me?

Anyway here’s a clip of an appearance on MuchMusic’s RapCity, with Oliver! Remember that guy? Yes, yes I did the boggle.

A lot of artists submit music to us, not all of it good. I’ve seen people take offense to the feedback we provide and I’ve seen some take it and build.

A bright eyed Theology 3 came to us many years ago when we were on college radio at York University’s CHRY 105.5 FM. Our first impressions were, “he’s alright, nothing spectacular”, he could have said Read the rest of this entry »

LOL at this, Shaq waited until after the Game 6 massacre to drop this! I gotta admit, I gained a lot of respect for Kobe as a player and teammate this year, but in my mind, he is still a snitch for name dropping Shaq when he was in hot water with that Colorado white girl! “Well Shaq does it all the time” is not an excuse and there is no need to drag anyone down with you just because you got jungle fever while you were rehabbing. This is well deserved and hilarious in my opinion!

Vault

Due to popular demand, I have decided to unlock the sclusie vault and share some rare gems with y’all. I mean what’s the point of being the sclusie executive if I can’t share some hard-to-find heat with our loyal listeners?! With that being said, you can expect a regular installment of “Unlocking The Vault” on a weekly basis, chalked full of demos, unreleased joints, and unreleased albums. Let me just throw out the obligatory disclaimer that this segment will be composed of only unreleased material never intended to see the light of day, so think twice before you ask me for the new Nas album, because the only link you will be getting is to HMV. We do not condone or advocate the bootlegging of material intended for sale, as this practice will only lead to the extinction of authentic music.

Jaylib

It’s only right the first installment features one the most heavily played artists on our show. Yep, you guessed it, the late, great James Yancey aka Jay Dee aka J Dilla. After a Dilla beat CD made its way into the hands of Dilla’s west coast counterpart, Madlib, the duo of Jaylib was born. Madlib was so inspired by the beats, he began putting his raps to them, and before we knew it, the demo version of what later would be the “Champion Sound” LP had leaked onto the net. This demo features early versions of songs that would later appear on the LP, as well as a couple of joints left on the cutting room floor.

Download the demo here!

In addition to the demos, a CD full of outtakes from the album would drop in 2005, featuring a lot of songs and beats not included on the demo that leaked in 2003.

Black Moon – Stay Real

Black Moon – Buck Em Down

The Harbourfront Summer Series is always on point! I’ve been going for a few years now and have never been dissapointed, having previously seen Little Brother and Dwele for the low admission of $0.00. This year was no different, with Buckshot and 9th Wonder being the main attraction (for myself at least). I got there too late to see Junior Reid but I heard his performance was tight.

With two collaborative albums (“Chemistry” and “The Formula”) under their belt, I came in thinking Buck and 9th would be doing a ton of joints from them… I’m very glad to say I was wrong. They ended up doing only 3 joints (“No Comparison”, “Go All Out”, and “Hold It Down”) from the LPs and a ton of classic Black Moon (“How Many MCs”, “Who Got The Props”, “Buck Em Down” etc.).

Shout out to my man Edwin for the videos, they are short (this is what I have to resort to when you don’t bring your camera Inzany) but sweet!

PPP – Waajeed Interview

Man the D has definitely made an impact on Hip Hop, but ya’ll know that already. Besides Dilla and Em there are other cats that helped build and continue to advance the scene. A couple of those cats are Saadiq and Waajeed aka the Platinum Pied Pipers, now known as PPP. They’ll be in town for North by North East this Saturday at the Sound Academy (11 Polson St.) for the Academy Soul Showcase along with Amanda Diva, Kae Sun, Coultrain and Karma.

We kicked it with Wajeed on his way home from the airport about their new album “Abundance” and of course production.
